Things aren’t like they used to be; things are different now …

My mother and I used to spend hours of our day fetching water. I would make up games or stories in my imagination to entertain us as we walked under the hot sun. But things aren’t like they used to be; things are different now. My mother has a hippo roller. I still play games and tell stories but not on as many water walks.

My father used to work very hard for very little. He is a good man, a strong man, a proud man. I hope to be just like him someday. Things grew darker at home for a while. He tried to hide it, but I could see worry in his eyes. Our meals grew smaller. My father looked for more work. I heard him talking in hushed tones about our home and the roof. But things aren’t like they used to be; things are different now. A new savings and loan program enabled my father to replace the roof and restored the joy and pride in his eyes.

My older sister used to get sick often, every few weeks, and miss many days of school at a time. My mother had even had conversations with her about whether or not she should continue in school. I became very worried. My sister is very smart and does well with her studies. I didn’t like the thought of her having to give up. But things aren’t like they used to be; things are different now. My sister has a new bag with supplies to help her when she’s not feeling well. Now she continues to go to school and has many ideas for her future.

My village is full of hard working people. There is a great love shared among all of our people. Our people are hard-working, caring, and proud. Things aren’t like they used to be; things are different now; things are better than ever before. We have started meeting together under a shelter to learn together and worship our Creator and Savior. Soon we will have a full structure … a complete house for God. Things will never again be like they used to be; things will keep getting better.
